President Roosevelt creates the OSS under General William Donovan — America's first centralized intelligence agency. The OSS runs agents throughout Nazi-occupied Europe, coordinates with British MI6, and lays the structural and personnel foundation for the CIA.

President Truman signs the National Security Act, creating the Central Intelligence Agency. The CIA is tasked with coordinating foreign intelligence — but its mandate quickly expands beyond anything Congress originally intended. Former OSS officers flood the new agency.

The CIA secretly funds and arms "stay-behind" paramilitary networks across Western Europe designed to resist Soviet occupation. The program continues for decades and becomes linked to false-flag terrorist attacks in Italy during the 1970s-80s.

The CIA recruits former Nazi scientists, engineers, and intelligence officers into U.S. government service. Over 1,600 individuals are secretly relocated. Their work directly shapes NASA, the U.S. chemical weapons program, and early CIA interrogation techniques.

The CIA's most disturbing program — systematic human experimentation using LSD, electroshock therapy, sensory deprivation, hypnosis, and psychological abuse on unwitting American and Canadian citizens. At least one subject, Frank Olson, dies under suspicious circumstances. Most files destroyed in 1973.

The CIA and British MI6 orchestrate the overthrow of Prime Minister Mohammed Mosaddegh after he nationalizes the Anglo-Persian Oil Company. Shah Pahlavi is restored to power. The coup plants seeds of resentment that culminate in the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

The CIA topples Guatemalan President Jacobo Arbenz on behalf of the United Fruit Company. A CIA-backed military junta takes power, beginning four decades of brutal military rule that kills over 200,000 Guatemalans.

The CIA trains and deploys 1,500 Cuban exiles in an attempt to overthrow Fidel Castro. The operation fails catastrophically within 72 hours. Kennedy publicly accepts blame but privately blames CIA Director Allen Dulles, who resigns. The botched invasion becomes the CIA's most public failure.

CIA-led counterinsurgency program targeting Viet Cong political infrastructure through systematic capture, interrogation, and assassination. An estimated 20,000–40,000 people were killed under the program, which became a model for future CIA "targeted killing" operations.

The Senate Church Committee investigates the CIA following Watergate-era disclosures. The "Family Jewels" documents reveal assassination plots against foreign leaders, domestic surveillance programs, and MKUltra. CIA Director William Colby cooperates fully, infuriating the intelligence community.

The CIA facilitates illegal arms sales to Iran and secretly funnels profits to Nicaraguan Contra rebels, in direct violation of the Boland Amendment. CIA Director William Casey dies before he can testify. National Security Council staffer Oliver North becomes the face of the scandal.

Post-9/11, the CIA runs a global network of secret "black sites" where detainees are waterboarded, sleep-deprived, and subjected to other "enhanced interrogation" techniques. The 2014 Senate Torture Report (redacted) confirms the program and finds it produced no unique intelligence.

NSA contractor Edward Snowden leaks classified documents revealing PRISM: mass collection of internet data from Google, Apple, Facebook, and Microsoft. The annual "black budget" for the U.S. intelligence community is revealed to be $52.6 billion. Snowden flees to Hong Kong, then Russia.

The U.S. intelligence community receives an estimated $70+ billion annually in classified funding. Programs span AI-assisted surveillance, cyberwarfare, drone assassination programs, and information operations across social media platforms. The bulk of these programs remain hidden from the public.
